John is a highly experienced capital markets and finance lawyer with more than two decades advising on complex, cross‑border financing transactions across Asia, including Korea, Hong Kong, the PRC, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Mongolia.
He has deep expertise across the full spectrum of financing products, including bonds, high-yield bonds, private credit financings, structured and secured bonds and loans, corporate hybrid securities, regulatory capital instruments, IPOs, preference share issuances, global depositary receipts, convertible and exchangeable bonds, and commercial paper and certificate of deposit programmes. He also advises on general corporate matters and funds and M&A related transactions.
Before joining David Cameron Law Office, John spent over 24 years at Allen Overy Shearman Sterling, where he held a number of senior leadership roles. He served as Head of APAC International Capital Markets, sat on both the global and ICM Partner Selection Committees, and played an active role in the firm’s People & Culture initiatives, including as Hong Kong DE&I Partner Champion. His experience leading teams and stewarding firm governance complements his technical excellence in finance.
He is consistently recognised by leading legal directories. John has been ranked for 12 consecutive years by Chambers Greater China Region (Capital Markets: Debt) and is named a leading or highly regarded practitioner by Legal 500 Asia Pacific and IFLR1000. He has contributed to award‑winning transactions, including the ALB China Law Awards’ Debt Market Deal of the Year (Midsize) in 2023 and multiple IFLR Asia‑Pacific Team of the Year awards.
John is qualified in California and in England & Wales and speaks Korean and English.
